After spending a year and a half in the Apache Incubator with strong community and preliminary support, the Apache Software Foundation promoted their Libcloud to Top-Level Project status. Libcloud is an open source Python library with support for interfaces to many cloud provider APIs, including Amazon EC2, Rackspace Cloud, GoGrid, and Linode. Using a single, simple API , the project aims to allow an operations team to write their code once and deploy it without being locked down to one vendor.

"More than half our customers use multiple cloud vendors, since adding Libcloud compatibility we've been able to more effectively support their computing aims in the cloud through cross platform compatibility,"  - Robert Jenkins, CTO of CloudSigma

So now that Libcloud is a Top-Level project, what plans are in store for its future? Apache Libcloud Vice President Tomax Muraus explains, "Our goal going forward is to support all the major cloud services offered by different providers." More information and downloads for Libcloud can be found at the Apache Libcloud homepage.

Apache Libcloud is already being used in several production environments including OOI Cyberinfrastructure, Cloudkick, GlobalRoute and ServerDensity.
