Digi-Key Electronics’ Internet of Things (IoT) Resource Center Inspires the Future: Read More
Right now, the Internet of Things is still in its (relative) infancy. With a lack of standardization and a hodgepodge of protocols and hardware to consider, it can be hard to get your vision off the ground. However, toward that end, Ericsson just launched the IoT Accelerator Marketplace. It's an attempt to further leverage their Accelerator platform to bring service providers and developers together. The goal? To increase the speed of IoT solution creation.
To see what's up, we spoke with Ericsson's head of IoT solutions Osvaldo Aldao. Here's what he had to say and how you can get involved.
What is the IoT Accelerator Marketplace?
The IoT Accelerator Marketplace is a brand-new capability on the existing IoT Accelerator platform. The new capabilities allow a global scale ecosystem of application developers to have access to new functionalities beyond standard IoT platforms. The functionality set exposed via the developer portal allows them to create network-aware smarter applications, which will be friendly to our customers' networks and have better utilization of the 3GPP network resources.
How does the Marketplace work, both from a service provider standpoint and an app developer standpoint?
The IoT Accelerator Marketplace has launched to help address the need for collaboration within the digital ecosystem community.
For service providers, the IoT Accelerator Marketplace is a catalog to find IoT apps from the global ecosystem to offer enterprise customers and providers shorter time to market for new offerings for their enterprise customers.
For application developers and application partners, it is a window to an IoT ecosystem to connect with service providers through one single platform, exposing global cellular connectivity APIs. It also includes monetization and settlement capabilities to facilitate monetization and billing across the ecosystem.
Application developers can sign up for free-of-charge access to the IoT Accelerator Marketplace to develop applications based on the IoT Accelerator capabilities. Once an application is created they can apply to become an Ecosystem partner. The Ericsson marketplace exposes these applications to services providers around the world. Ericsson’s role is to allow matchmaking between application partners and services providers, delivering value to enterprises and the market in general. This will enable app developers to scale their business and develop applications based on cellular connectivity APIs with added value for enterprises, such as fast and automated device and subscription onboarding, higher security, ubiquitous cellular coverage around the world, improved for indoor utilization, and superior handling of battery life.
What are the use cases or industries the Marketplace will focus on?
Industries include auotomotive, manufacturing, transport and logistics, the public sector, and smart cities.
What are some of the holes in IoT application development the Marketplace can help fill? What challenges does it solve?
The IoT Accelerator Marketplace provides servicer providers with shorter time to market for new offerings to their enterprise customers and an increased attractiveness for app developers to join the local (or global) service provider ecosystem by exposing global cellular connectivity API's. Application developers will benefit from a new go-to-market channel through Ericsson's service provider customers. They will be able to scale their business and at the same time develop applications based on cellular connectivity APIs with added value for enterprises such as fast and automated device and subscription onboarding, high security, ubiquitous cellular coverage around the world and improved for indoor utilization, and superior handling of battery life.
What are the costs/pricing to enter or use the Marketplace?
Application developers can sign up for access to the IoT Accelerator Marketplace free-of-charge and develop applications based on the IoT Accelerator capabilities.
How do developers or service providers integrate these projects into their own?
We do a match-making between Services providers opportunities/needs and application developers and vice versa
What are some future improvements that are being planned?
We plan to bring into the platform different ecosystems from industry partners.
How can people get involved?
Service providers and application developers can request access to the IoT Accelerator Marketplace here: IoT Accelerator Marketplace.
