The last 5 years or so has seen some interesting developments in the print on demand field. The explosion of the industry has seen it's fair share of successes and failures but none have delivered the much vaunted high quality factor at a competitive price.
Produced by PQ Blackwell which established their reputation as an award-winning originator of photography books and found success working with the Italian notebook maker Moleskine to launch a high quality print-on-demand photo book business, MOLESKINE + MILK. They are now adding to their print-on-demand platform with the launch of a new API POD service, founded on the same values that underpin their existing publishing and print on demand activities.
This new API allows app and web developers to easily offer high quality POD services which will in turn enable them to enhance and further monetize their products. Standard integration can be achieved within hours and does not require any investment.
Geoff Blackwell, founder of the PQ Blackwell Group, commented.
"At the heart of our company is a deep belief in the enduring beauty and value of beautifully printed objects. We cherish technology, but unlike megabytes of text floating in the intangible ether of the Internet, elegantly printed books and prints remain beautiful tactile objects that have enormous symbolic power and lasting value. we love these objects and produce ours with a great deal of care"
"The API allows users to select their content and to elegantly arrange it in a beautiful range of products, all made with a great deal od care and produced with the highest quality materials, from photo books to albums, canvas frames to gallery frames, boxed note cards to post cards. The technology makes integration quick and easy and we provide a complete service including automated communication layers, production, shipping, 7 day client support service and reporting."
Early enterprise partners have already benefited from implementing the MILK&PRINT API. Paper by FiftyThree launched BOOK in collaboration with PQ Blackwell and was awarded Gold Award in the Digital Design category by the Industrial Design Society of America (isda.org). ISDA is a large trade organization and this is considered a prestigious industry award.
What I have found is that other companies produce poor quality products at ridiculous prices that only have a shelf life of a year tops, however users buy these products because they think it's the norm. PQ Blackwell are changing that mindset and saying that you don't have to settle for an inferior product that once your child gets hold of it you immediately consign it to the bin. They are upping the bar with regards to quality products at affordable prices. Creating photo books that become collectible artworks about your or your families life.
The technical integration is simple. The API is flexible in how it can be integrated into an app. In any implementation there are 2 parts.
API Level - calls from the application to the MILK API. This is handled at the application level
Web Level - functionality handled inside the web view. This is handled by MILK.
How much user interface is developed inside the application is dependent on the point the user is switched over to the web view.
MILK&PRINT API is powered by AWS providing a highly reliable and sophisticated web service that can easily match growth. Combining this with the HTTPS always-on policy that keeps all data entry secure and a secure payment option with Payment Express or Credit Card with PCI DDS compliant payment solutions then you have a very secure system that gives the client and user peace of mind.
