In the dynamic world of cloud-native applications, the security and accessibility of data is more important than ever. NAKIVO is an organization dedicated to virtual machine backup and recovery solutions for environments such as VMware, Hyper-V, and AWS EC2 environments. NAKIVO has recently released v9.0 of its Backup and Replication solution to include VM backup for Windows Server. It’s a significant release, and as such, it introduces a major feature, along with various improvements and fixes. With this release, NAKIVO Backup and Replication now offers a complete data protection feature set for virtualized environments, including local and offsite VM Backup and Replication, support for live applications and databases, instant granular recovery, network acceleration, global data deduplication, Web UI, AES-256 encryption, advanced reporting, and cloud support.

Evolution of VM Backup Solutions

In earlier days, taking a backup of data from a virtualized environment was not an easy task. Backup solutions used by corporations in the past were unreliable, very expensive, and very time-consuming. With the advent of virtualization technology, backups became even more complicated.

Making its debut over a decade ago, NAKIVO sprung up during the time of exploding interest in virtual machines. As one of the early solutions, NAKIVO has had the benefit of time on its side and has been maturing and evolving its offering as the VM marketplace has changed. NAKIVO’s solutions are mature and support all major virtualization platforms. In a world where distributed architecture is the norm and organizations rely on multiple vendors at the same time, a solution that works everywhere is needed.

Despite everyone talking about cloud, a large number of companies still run physical servers as their primary infrastructure. Some database vendors’ licensing is known to be very complex and restrictive when it comes to running in a virtual environment. Running applications in a physical instance is usually considered as a tried and tested option that doesn’t skirt licensing and compliance regulations. With this release, NAKIVO is looking to address the needs of these organizations and help them modernize the way they function, even if they run on older infrastructure models.

About NAKIVO Backup and Replication

NAKIVO supports platforms, such as VMware, Hyper-V, AWS EC2, and Nutanix AHV environments. NAKIVO supports application-aware backup on virtual and physical servers, ensuring that backup can be restored to platforms. With the recent release of v9.0 beta, NAKIVO Backup and Replication now offers some new functionalities with physical Windows Server backups, such as support for Hyper-V 2019, incrementally changed block tracking, application-aware backups, and physical Windows server backups.

Let’s have an in-depth look at the new features and support contained in this release.

Windows Server Backup

v9.0, NAKIVO Backup and Replication also supports physical server backup for mixed environments. In v9.0, Windows Server backups are performed in an application-aware mode, ensuring consistency of all applications and databases (SQL, Microsoft Exchange, Active Directory, SharePoint, Oracle, etc.) running on Windows Server.

With NAKIVO Backup and Replication, you can back up your Windows server, including the data of applications such as SQL, Microsoft Exchange, Active Directory, SharePoint, and Oracle. You can also recover individual files and objects, improve performance with network acceleration, and save storage space with global deduplication and compression.

NAKIVO Backup and Replication v9.0 protects Windows Server backups from any unauthorized access. Windows Server backups can be encrypted. To protect physical Windows Server Backups, NAKIVO Backup and Replication v9.0 beta uses AES 256-bit encryption. By using this feature, an encryption key can be set to secure the backup. NAKIVO has also extended its acceleration technologies to cover Windows Server backups.

Hyper-V 2019 Support

The NAKIVO Backup and Replication v9.0 Beta release includes support for Hyper-V 2019. With this beta release, NAKIVO is now compatible with Hyper-V 2019.

Physical to Virtual (P2V) From Backup

v9.0 has introduced advanced P2V functionality. NAKIVO Backup and Replication can recover physical Windows Server machines to VMware and Hyper-V VMs. With the P2V functionality in place, you can easily perform a migration of your physical workloads to a virtual environment.

NAKIVO Data Protection Solution for NEC HYDRAstor

NAKIVO has combined its efforts with NEC to create data protection for various virtualization platforms, including VMware, Hyper-V, AWS EC2, Nutanix AHV, and Windows Servers. As a part of the combined solution, NEC HYDRAstor’s deduplication technology solves the problem of continually expanding backup size while NAKIVO Backup and Replication protects virtual environments from data corruption and data loss. The solution delivers a data protection solution that can decrease the size of backups by up to 95% and ensure data protection for the environment.

Product Installation

NAKIVO products can be installed on Windows or Linux, and directly onto a NAS. They run natively on Synology, QNAP, Western Digital, ASUSTOR, and NETGEAR. They are separated from the virtual infrastructure, so they do not consume any resources. NAKIVO Backup and Replication also offers support for deduplication appliances such as NEC HYDRAstor and Dell/EMC Data Domain.

Hardware Requirements

NAKIVO Backup and Replication can back up physical machines with several operating systems, including Microsoft Windows Server 2008R2 64-bit, Microsoft Windows Server 2012 64-bit, Microsoft Windows Server 2012R2 64-bit, Microsoft Windows Server 2016 64-bit, and Microsoft Windows Server 2019 64-bit. NAKIVO Backup and Replication supports NTFS, FAT 32, and ReFS Windows File Systems.

v9.0 Key Advantages

The key advantages of NAKIVO Backup and Recovery v9.0 include fast deployment, higher backup speed, smaller backup size, instant recovery, and guaranteed recoverability. The latest version of NAKIVO Backup and Replication performs incremental Windows Server backups, meaning that unique blocks of data are copied to the backup repository.

To further optimize the use of storage space, NAKIVO Backup and Replication relies on built-in compression and global deduplication mechanisms. Moreover, NAKIVO Backup and Replication can automatically delete Microsoft Exchange and Microsoft SQL logs after a successful Windows Server backup.

Nakivo Backup and Recovery can be installed on Windows, Linux, or NAS and can be deployed as a pre-configured virtual appliance or AWS AMI. It offers an incremental backup with CBT/RCT/CRT, LAN-free data transfer and network acceleration. NAKIVO BR v9.0 supports advanced features like the exclusion of swap data, global backup deduplication, variable backup compression, and truncation of SQL and Exchange logs.

Additionally, one-click orchestrated failover, failback, datacenter migration, and non-disruptive disaster recovery testing are available. Also, it features backup verification with screenshots of test-recovered VMs and saves the backup copy offsite in addition to AWS/Azure Cloud. Moreover, it also offers recovery of VMs, files, and application objects back to the source.
