Open-Source IntelliJ IDEA: There’s More Where That Came From!

One year ago, on Oct 15, 2009, JetBrains released an announcement that made a big impact on the world of IDEs, IntelliJ IDEA went open-source. Today we’re looking back on this past year and sharing some more exciting news on what’s coming next.

What It Was Like

Oh boy, was that frightening! Something we had worked on for 9 years, something that made up the lives of dozens of developers, was going to become open and free.
But it was so exciting too! And not just for us. In an instant, we got almost as popular as Halloween!

What’s Been Happening

It’s been a great year for JetBrains. We’ve seen a real shift in awareness of IntelliJ IDEA in many developer communities, especially Java, Flex, Scala, Groovy and Android.

These charts clearly show the recent growth — and we think this is just the beginning.

Last but not least, there’s been no sales drop of IntelliJ IDEA Ultimate for which, truth be told, we were prepared. In the 10 months following last December’s release we have experienced a 25% increase in new customers over the same period last year. Woo-hoo!

What’s Next

More Open

IntelliJ IDEA 10 is planned for release later this fall, with more functionality available in the free Community edition. To be clear this is not only because we’ve added new features in version 10. We are also making Android development plugin available in free IntelliJ IDEA Community Edition.

Involving Community

We’ve always had an energetic community around JetBrains. Our products owe a lot to those active developers who contribute their feedback and ideas to us. Taking it further, and looking forward to continued participation, we are opening IntelliJ IDEA Community Wiki at wiki.jetbrains.net today.
Some articles and tutorials are already available there and you are welcome to contribute yours.
