I had the opportunity to hear Larry Ellison, Founder & CTO, Oracle during two keynotes at Oracle Open World. Larry's premise is that human labor creates human error and by automated processes around databases, cloud infrastructure, and operating systems we can save 30,000 lives per year with autonomous vehicles, eliminate data theft, and improve quality and security.
Autonomous systems eliminate human labor. And by eliminating human error, you eliminate pilot error. The scale of the benefit of eliminating human labor is enormous when running computer systems. We spend much more on people than we do on storage, on compute, or any of our physical assets. Resource sharing is on top of the savings of human labor.
Eliminating human error, is much more important to me than the economic savings. If you eliminate human error in autonomous systems, you eliminate data theft.
Oracle Autonomous Database uses machine learning (ML) to automatically and continuously patch, tune, backup, and upgrade itself without manual intervention, while the system is running. The autonomous database improves security and performance while reducing operating costs and enabling developers, DBAs, and ops to focus on higher-level business priorities.

Ellison then proceeded to introduce the new Always Free program for developers who want to use the Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI). The Always Free program includes the essentials users need to build and test applications in the cloud: Oracle Autonomous Database, Compute VMs, Block Volumes, Object, and Archive Storage, and Load Balancer. Specifications include:
- 2 Autonomous Databases (Autonomous Data Warehouse or Autonomous Transaction Processing), each with 1 OCPU and 20 GB storage
- 2 Compute VMs, each with 1/8 OCPU and 1 GB memory
- 2 Block Volumes, 100 GB total, with up to 5 free backups
- 10 GB Object Storage, 10 GB Archive Storage, and 50,000/month API requests
- 1 Load Balancer, 10 Mbps bandwidth
- 10 TB/month Outbound Data Transfer
- 500 million ingestion Datapoints and 1 billion Datapoints for Monitoring Service
- 1 million Notification delivery options per month and 1,000 emails per month
The Generation2 Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) is autonomous, thereby eliminating human intervention for administration thereby eliminating human error. This helps prevent data theft perpetrated by increasingly advanced, sophisticated, and automated hackers. Ellison exemplified the point by comparing OCI to AWS:
Amazon takes a very reasonable position and says that if you misconfigure your system, that’s your mistake. As a customer you maintain full control of your content and responsibility for configuring access to AWS services. That’s on you.
When you use the Oracle Autonomous Database, it configures itself. It’s not possible for customers to make configuration errors, because there are no pilots to make errors. The system configures itself.
So in the Amazon cloud if you make an error and it leads to a catastrophic data loss, that’s on you. In the Oracle Cloud if you use the Autonomous Database human beings are not involved, there can be no human error. The system is responsible for preventing data loss. Not you. Us.
Oracle Autonomous Linux, along with the new Oracle OS Management Service, is the first autonomous operating environment that eliminates complexity and human error to deliver cost savings, security, and availability for customers. Keeping systems patched and secure is one of the biggest ongoing challenges faced by IT today. Tasks can be tedious and error-prone, and extremely difficult to manage in large-scale cloud environments. Oracle Autonomous Linux enables customers to rely on autonomous capabilities to help ensure their systems are secure and highly available to help prevent cyberattacks.
