Protecode Inc. announced the general availability of its software development tool for Code Content Mapping and Intellectual Property (IP) management. The product enables software enterprises to accelerate managed adoption of open source code in a simple, painless process, resulting in lower development efforts and shorter product intervals.  The product also allows software creators to automatically maintain a map of all code files and snippets within their projects, resolving IP ownership questions and augmenting Software Quality Record keeping.  Protecode automatically generates records of software content, identifies and reports associated pedigree and licensing information by checking its properties and compliance against an organization’s policies, establishing IP ownership and creating a software Bill of Materials (BOM).

“What we like about the tool is the way it brings forward the detection of license policy violations to the developers desktop, where they can be quickly addressed, before they get deeply embedded in the product,” said Simon Redding, Vice President, R&D of Zeligsoft, a leading vendor of software development tools to the embedded computing industry. “The Bill of Materials, containing the origin of all external, included and depended upon code, is kept up to date on an ongoing basis. The alternative of scanning all code at product release time can result in some nasty surprises and little time to address them.”
The product provides the following features:
  • Completely unobtrusive, simple to adopt and painless to operate in the background.
  • Follows and safeguards IP policies as defined by an administrator for the organization.
  • Support for multiple languages and infrastructures including Java, C/C++
  • Support for development environments including Eclipse, MyEclipse, QNX Momentics, Rational Application Developer, Rational Software Architect, SAP NetWeaver,Wind River Workbench.
  • Certified IBM Ready for Rational.
  • Output reports with interactive features.
  • Scalable, from one developer on a project to hundreds of developers in multiple locations, due to Protecode’s distributed architecture.

“Today, software IP contamination is a significant threat to any commercial software development effort,” said Mark Driver, Research Vice President at Gartner Research, a leading information technology research and advisory company. “Automated, early, and unobtrusive identification of even small code segments would better allow developers to leverage open source software in a safe and controlled manner.”

Product

Protecode makes policy driven software IP management part of the development process.  Protecode tools consist of the Protecode IP Server (GIPS), which is the continuously updated global repository of software IP attributes, and the Protecode Client, which includes the Protecode Tracker, the Protecode Reporter and the Enterprise Adopter.  The latter enables speedy identification of the existing code portfolio within an enterprise. The Protecode Admin – a web-based administration module - enables definition, capture and assignment of IP compliance policies to project teams.

Pricing and Access

Protecode can be readily accessed as an Eclipse plugin at the Protecode Update Site at http://update.protecode.com to evaluate for 30 days. On a subscription basis, the annual license fee is $250 per developer seat and covers access to the Global Intellectual Property database, updates and upgrades. Alternatively a local IP database can be purchased and operated within an organization.  For anyone working on an active Eclipse project, the company is offering a complimentary, one year subscription.
