One of the challenges I faced in my Agile coaching journey was to identify and determine the right coaching strategy based on the team dynamics at play. As we all are aware, each individual in our teams has got a unique set of emotions, priorities and they exhibit unique behavior patterns and personalities. As an Agile coach, it is important for me to identify these patterns and come up with a coaching strategy for implementation and execution.
Based on the numerous coaching sessions and experiences, I have come up with an interesting tool leveraging the gamification way. This involves using a standard deck of playing cards.
I have personally applied this technique and have found it to be quite effective in helping me identify the likely coaching style and stance to be adapted.
Let the Game Start...
We need to separate out all the 16 picture/court cards out of a Standard Playing card deck.
Each picture card represents a role in our enterprise/teams played by team members as represented in the picture below:
Each suit card represents a personality and behavior style exhibited by the member belonging to that suit. There are 4 suits: Hearts, Clubs, Spades, and Diamonds. Each of them has a unique personality styles as displayed in the below picture:
An Agile team comprises a mix of suit cards and picture cards and our team would consist of many permutations and combinations possible (4 Suit x 4 Picture Cards). This throws up an interesting set of personality and roles at play and for us as coaches, it sometimes becomes very difficult to figure out an apt coaching strategy.
I have just tried to explain a single combination out of multiple such combinations which can exist.
- Senior Management (Ace of Diamonds): Driven by numbers.
- Project Leadership/Delivery (King of Hearts): Emotional, possess human sense.
- Scrum Master (Queen of Spades): Direct and blunt.
- Product Owner (Jack of Clubs): Hard-working but overwhelmed with work.
Based on the combination, the below picture lists out the possible coaching strategy I can apply as described in the picture below:
This gamification exercise would serve as a good ready reckoner for Agile coaches and help them out to come out their coaching styles and stances and would be a blueprint to steer their teams an Agile Way of Working.
