In the new release of Hortonworks Data Platform, HDP 2.5, a few things have changed, some have stayed the same. I have documented a few helpful links geared at Java and Scala developers interested in using Hive and Spark on this upgraded platform.

If you are having problems with an HDFS folder, checking the Filesystem in HDFS for a Directory:
 hdfs fsck / You should  su hdfs  to run this.

For accessing Hive table data, you should now use Beeline and not the old Hive CLI. This article is a good Introduction to Beeline.

Example Hive2 URL for Beeline or JDBC Access

For a more detailed usage with optimal parameters for fast data access.

Example usage:

!connect jdbc:hive2://SERVER:2181/default;
set hive.vectorized.execution.enabled=true;
set hive.execution.engine=tez;
set hive.vectorized.execution.enabled =true;
set hive.vectorized.execution.reduce.enabled =true;
set hive.compute.query.using.stats=true;
set hive.cbo.enable=true;
set hive.stats.fetch.column.stats=true;
set hive.stats.fetch.partition.stats=true;
show tables;

beeline -u jdbc:hive2://SERVER:2181/default -f script.sql --color=true --showHeader=true --verbose=true --outputformat=table

Bookmark this page as it has all the HDP 2.5 documentation that you need.    With the new Hortonworks HCA Certification, this will serve as a good resource for this.

cd /usr/hdp/current/spark2-client/
./bin/spark-submit --class my.package.ClassName --master yarn-cluster
