ResearchStack is a new SDK and framework for Android devices.

Medical research data collection applications can now be built to collect data from people who don't have enough money to afford an iPhone. In March of this year Apple introduced an SDK called ResearchKit. It was hailed as an important step towards using our devices to actively collect data that might help us, either personally or if aggregated the population at large. One of the issues withResearchKit being an Apple only SDK is that it selects a certain economic strata from which to collect data. Since the Android platform has a broader worldwide footprint and a lower cost of entry for the end-user a similar SDK and framework are being developed targeting Android.

Cornell Tech'sSmall Data Lab and Open mHealth in conjunction with touchlab are developing the technology and it is initially being funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. As you would expect it is not a common/dual (Apple/Android) platform development environment, but it does promise to simplify developing similar collection applications on both platforms. Currently the GitHub version is in Alpha, but a Beta version is expected in January 2016.
