Rumor: Microsoft to Manufacture Own Phone?
The interwebs have been stirring in the past few days with rumors that Microsoft is planning to manufacture and sell its own Microsoft-brand handset for its Windows Phone 8 OS.
The rumors originated when the China Times reported that Microsoft had (according to a very rough translation) “put into development of smart phone hardware and selected a Shuo assembly partner.”
Boy Genius Reports picked the story up, saying that a “trusted source” reported to them that “Microsoft is quietly working on an own-brand smartphone that will compete directly with high-end devices like Apple’s iPhone 5 and Samsung’s Galaxy S III, also with Windows Phones built by its own vendor partners.”
However, BGR’s trusted source “declined to provide any details beyond the fact that the handset is in the late stages of development and will launch in the coming months.”
Images of Surface Phone Are Amateur’s Concept
BGR then did the internet a huge favor by attaching images from the DeviantArt page of Jonas Daehnert, a guy who makes speculative designs of phones and tablets. While Daehnert’s designs are well-done and convincingly photographed, they are not official designs.
Microsoft's Tablet Setting a New Trend?
Does Microsoft really have its own-branded handset in the works? We’ll have to wait and see, because none of these rumors seem very reputable. However, it wouldn’t come as much of a surprise, especially considering the announcement earlier this year of the Microsoft Surface Tablet. Since they’ve already got the tablet, why not make the phone?
