SDN Focuses More on Planning Than NFV

Bloggers and vendors are saying lots of different things about the relationship between Software Defined Networking (SDN) and Network Function Virtualization (NFV).  Some say that they're very very different and some say that one leads to the other.  The author of The Networking Nerd blog says that they're two sides of the same coin.

Which method is better?  Should we spend all our time planning the system and hope that our Powerpoint Designs work the right way when someone codes them in a few months? [referring to SDN]  Or should we say “damn the torpedoes” and start building things left and right and hope that someone will figure out a way to tie all these individual pieces together at some point? [referring to NFV]
