What is UX?
Websites, web applications, and desktop applications are systems, known as the concept of human-computer interaction (HCI). Human interaction with systems is what we called the user experience (UX). UX is important because it aims to provide positive experiences that keep users loyal to the product or brand. With the rapid development of industry technology and methodology, websites and web applications are now more complex than before. The modern structure of static web pages have become so complicated, and some do greatly enhance the interactive design and experience.
According to the definition of UX, an excellent UX designer focuses more on the interactive level of products, asking questions like which way is the product displayed to the users in? In particular, how does the panel pop up? How does the user respond to the panel? UX designers study and evaluate a system’s user experience concerned with the system’s ease of use, value, practicality, efficiency, etc.
The Difference Between UX and UI
Actually, although UI and UX have a certain commonality, the definition of user experience is not equal to user interface.
UX is a very large category while UI is only a small part of UX to some degree. UI design focuses on the color and layout.
Take an example: if we need to design a button, UI-focused designers will design from a visual level, such as the shape, size, color, etc. However, the UX designer will consider where to place the button from the users’ perspective depending on their real needs and the practicality of it.
When Did UX Became So Important?
Recently, as the concept of user-centered design continues to increase, enhancing the importance of user experience design has become increasingly prominent. Over the past ten years, we all have witnessed a huge progress in software design. But software applications has become so complex and rich in functionality. If we want to enable them to become efficient, they must deliver a good user experience.
In addition, users tend to browse through different channels: mobile devices, various browsers and even different ways to connect to the internet.
This highlights the importance of usability. In terms of internet-based products, it is not enough to only meet the demands of screen reader and non-traditional input devices, but it is also needed to satisfy the demands of those who do not have broadband connections or use the old-fashioned mobile devices, etc.
That’s why the element of compatibility is very important, it is recommended to be compatible on as many devices as you can to achieve a larger user base, especially for the ever-growing mobile app market. You may consider purchasing every popular device on the market or approach a professional testing company to test software compatibility.
In essence, UX should follow a principle that solely depends on users. Their preferences and needs are to be considered to promote good experience and hence brand loyalty. Not only should our products be designed based on our point of view, but user’s needs should also be prioritized during designing and development.
How to Become An Excellent UX Designer
Sometimes, although people are aware of the UX element, they are not capable of user-centered designs. Thus, if you want to be a successful UX designer. You should do the following:
- Convey feelings and reduce cognitive load
- Listen to users’ voice, and pay attention to their feedback and iteration by conducting user interview
- Allow users to use your design conveniently in their usage scenarios
- Provide value for users
To sum up, UX largely focus on the users’ satisfaction and pleasure, it plays an important role in the business’ success. From a business’s point of view, it is essential to emphasize on the users’ satisfaction in order to build the brand value and reputation of the business. If the users are surfing your websites or using your applications, it is yours and your developers’ responsibility to navigate them to their predetermined target in the most efficient way. Hence, UX is an important element to consider during software or application development.
