According to Forrester, 2018 is the “Year of DevOps” with more than half of developer respondents reporting they have already implemented DevOps but have plans to expand, and another 27 percent planning to implement DevOps this year. To keep up with the tremendous growth in DevOps adoption, the newly named DevOps World | Jenkins World conference, has expanded its content with a breadth of industry topics for the 2018. As the largest gathering of IT executives, DevOps practitioners and Jenkins users in the world, the events provide many opportunities for attendees to expand their knowledge of the hottest topics in software development.

Over 70+ sessions will be hosted at DevOps World | Jenkins World San Francisco covering a variety of DevOps and Jenkins topics. Sessions will be conducted by practitioners from organizations such as Accenture, Allianz, BBC, CyberArk, Forrester Research, Fresenius Medical Care Deutschland, Southwest Airlines, Twitter, and CloudBees. While these sessions will cover a variety of topics pertinent to today’s developers, we recommend exploring sessions within the following three topics that encompass the current state of DevOps in 2018:

DevSecOps

Last year marked another record year for data breaches, which on average cost organizations more than $3.8 million dollars per breach. With modern software development relying on speed and agility, developers need to understand the bugs that can potentially make it to production and reduce their ability to build a fast-adapting product. Understanding how DevOps integrates with security, practical insights into addressing the security challenges with secrets, access keys, and credentials, as well as how to reduce over-privilege and eliminate secret duplication, is essential when responding to market needs quickly and reducing the likelihood of a breach or other vulnerability.

Containers and Kubernetes

Adoption of containers has increased within the past couple year — especially Kubernetes, which currently has more than 1,500 contributors with 62,000+ commits. Kubernetes specifically offers a way for IT organizations to leverage investments in all environments — on-premise and in the cloud (without vendor lock-in) — to run DevOps workloads, with no changes required. Containers are all about simplifying how software is built, deployed and managed, ultimately improving the developer experience to build software faster, more flexible and more securely.

Measuring DevOps

The annual DevOps Research and Assessment (DORA) State of DevOps Report, has popularized the measurement of the same set of key indicators to give executives, managers, and practitioners the ability to better understand DevOps performance and evaluate the impact of DevOps investments. The 2017 State of DevOps Report* identified four key metrics most relevant to today’s DevOps practitioners: Deployment Frequency, Mean Lead Time, Mean Time to Recover and Change Failure Rate. These metrics provide clear, objective measures of DevOps effectiveness to identify problem areas, make changes in processes and automation and continuously improve the way teams work. Understanding how people are “seeing” their systems is key to improving the DevOps process and achieving better quality software.

You can check out the following session at DevOps World | Jenkins World for more on measuring DevOps: Leading Through Change

Of course, there is no better person to discuss the State of DevOps than Dr. Nicole Forsgren
CEO and Chief Scientist at DORA. Nicole will be keynoting this year’s event in San Francisco and will be sharing how companies can become high performing technology organizations with support from the DORA sponsored State of DevOps Report. The report, comprised of more than 23,000+ responses over the last four years, provides insights into the key leadership, technical, architectural and product capabilities that drive these outcomes.
