Two things have caught my attention this week.
The first is the new Darth Vader comic book by Kieron Gillen and Salvador Larroca. The story picks up after “A New Hope” where Darth Vader is in deep trouble with Emperor Palpatine. Turns out there is PLENTY of blame to go around for the Death Star’s destruction, but Vader is the only one that survived. I won’t spoil the first story arc, but Vader decides he needs to get some back up from a droid army. Yep, that same droid army he and Obi-Wan fought against.
The second is this bit from a rather dated baseball article:
Things looked bleak for the Angels when they trailed by two runs in the ninth inning, but Los Angeles recovered thanks to a key single from Vladimir Guerrero to pull out a 7-6 victory over the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park on Sunday.
A robot wrote that. Well, specifically software wrote that. But let’s call it a robot because it’s fun.
Software and robots are a force multiplier. Just like advances in agricultural technology, these advances allow us to do more with the resources we have. They allow us to do things that are more impactful to our employer, our familiar, ourselves.
We make database schema automation software at Datical. And I tell all my customers the same thing:
We don’t sell software. We sell baseball games, piano recitals, date night with your significant other: all the things you want to do but can’t because you’re working.
That’s pretty powerful. The automation we provide doesn’t just add a column to a table. Our software allows a parent to make a parent-teacher conference. It allows a fiancé to make that cake tasting appointment.
But, we have investors and employees and customers. So, we have to be mindful to provide value to all of those parties. We have to go above and beyond in providing value to our customers, specifically a concrete return on investment. To that end, we’ve decided to do both: increase the quality of life for our technical users and provide amazing ROI for the company the users’ work for.
