The reality is that your laptop is a tool box, but your customers are real live people and people are individuals.
Internet marketing is all about understanding people and what they do, how they do it and why. IM is about understanding how individuals operate (psychology) as well as how groups of people behave (sociology) with some creativity and technology thrown into the mix.
Over the years, I have seen many people try to run an internet business from their laptops and without so much as picking up a phone. The operative word there is TRY.
For me, the magic of the internet is about opening doors to new people who I can then develop relationships with. I do this through Skype, in coffee shops, going to new events or email/messages. Sometimes they become customers, colleagues or JVPs.
Since many of my customers are technophobic or want to learn about online marketing, it makes sense to promote myself offline. Newspapers are a comfort zone for them, they may not find me through Google or Facebook, but they may well read the business section of the local paper.
The bottom line is this: Mix your media. Get off the computer and out into the world. Take the digital into the physical and bring the physical back to the digital. Weave your marketing efforts on and offline and remember that you are dealing with people.
