“The Data of Experience” at SXSW by Yet Analytics and the Advanced Distributed Learning Initiative

At this year’s South by Southwest (SXSW) Edu and Interactive conferences, big data startup Yet Analytics and ADL — the Advanced Distributed Learning Initiative of the U.S. Department of Defense — will be co-presenting on a new model of data technology and will be sharing the work of over fifteen organizations currently involved in the open source community which has grown up around it.

At the center of this technological community is the Experience API, (xAPI for short). A data interoperability specification originally designed to provide an increased ability to leverage new data sources involved in the tracking of training and performance analytics, xAPI provides a way to leverage the power of experiential big data derived from web and mobile services, virtual reality, video games and simulations, wearables, and the Internet of Things.

“One of the things that’s really impressive,” said Yet Analytics co-founder Margaret Roth, “is that a data technology originally designed for very complex military training functions is now being used in a very practical way to improve employee performance, customer service, and the return-on-investment of learning and development programs across industries.”

xAPI is an open source specification originally designed to allow for the gathering of activity and performance data from different types of data sources, especially in regards to learning and training activity. As a variety of xAPI technologies have evolved, use cases have formed around the core of learning and training in human assets functions within the Fortune 500, higher education, and government. Additionally, new applications — especially around new media, wearables, Internet of Things sensors and devices, and virtual reality — are increasingly developing.

“One of the more interesting developments,” said Yet Analytics CEO Shelly Blake-Plock, “is how the whole idea of performance data is being reevaluated. We are seeing clients now who are viewing even things like customer feedback and audience attention spans as aspects of the broader spectrum of human performance across connected and immersive environments.”

In the SXSW sessions, attendees will learn about xAPI, including how it works and how they can use it to improve individual and organizational goals. The presentations will include real case studies from within organizations running the range from the upper echelon of Fortune 500 to NGOs serving global workforce development goals. Including both corporate e-learning applications as well as out-of-the-box applications such as gathering a range of experiential data from operations as varied as marketing intelligence, medical training, and IoT-enabled performance metrics, the presentations will demonstrate the breadth of innovation happening throughout the xAPI technology community.

“Since the Experience API’s inception as a proposed solution to a distance learning problem, we’ve been constantly amazed by the ways that the community has not only supported xAPI, but applied it,” said Craig Wiggins, community manager at the Advanced Distributed Learning Initiative. “It is the most encouraging thing to see an adopter use the specification in their own context — often beyond what we had originally foreseen.”

In addition to the presentations, Yet Analytics will be releasing the first draft of the industry-led xAPIsec protocol — a community-driven set of information security best practices for activity and performance data which will provide guidance on infosec considerations as xAPI formalizes into a certified data standard.
