What do we mean by “operations” in the 21st century? Back in the dawn of the computer age, there was no distinction between dev and ops. Dev and ops started to separate in the ’60s, when programmer/analysts dumped boxes of punch cards into readers, and “computer operators” behind a glass wall scurried around mounting tapes in response to IBM JCL. With the advent of boxes and systems which developers can administer - do we need to treat IT and admins in the same suspicious, standoffish way as in the past? Where are we now in this relationship and technology?
