On his first day, one of the software developer interns where I work, in an attempt to communicate his competencies, started listing the various software IDEs he was familiar with. He listed Microsoft Visual Studio, Eclipse, etc. This was in response to his supervisor's inquiry into what kind of experience he has had. While, technically, his answer is valid, it doesn't tell me, and probably didn't tell his supervisor, a darned thing. Software development is not a job where that matters. In most other jobs, it is. For example, it is perfectly useful, if you are interning at some local journal or news company to tell your supervisor you have experience with Microsoft Publisher or Adobe Photoshop. Or in a data entry job, you might have experience using Oracle or Microsoft Access.
