Oh, on the compression question... Don't worry, we would not use lossy compression for a moment! As with all Eclipse software, pack200 versions of the software are on the official update sites from Eclipse.org, and our OneInstall technology is choosing the optimal versions of the artifact as part of packaging the software for delivery -- in this case, since we have an installer (instead of just a simple zip/tgz) where we can do processing of the artifacts, it's just like someone using the p2 director or any other application.

msman/Ian, sorry you feel that way. However, you say these things assuming the only way to "contribute" to Eclipse is by writing and testing the code for the packages. Genuitec has been the lead contributor on several Eclipse projects, including Mayanstall and Blinki. We are founding members of the Eclipse Foundation, and continue to contribute financially. We served on the board for several years. Hardly a "lack of commitment." The entire Eclipse ecosystem is based on the consumption, contribution and improved experiences around high-quality code bases. Providing a free, experiential value-add to the packages should be celebrated, not vilified. Your company, EclipseSource, manufactures products that improve issues around the Eclipse experience just as we do. Would you say your own employer is "kicking us in the face" by solving issues and adding value to Eclipse? I hardly think so. We all drive each other to be better, give more away, and stay in business. I will not apologize for using our company's time and energy to provide - at our own expense without charge or obligation to anyone - a nice, easy-to-consume Eclipse distribution for anyone in the community. I understand your closeness to the process and genuinely appreciate your hard work. Eclipse, EclipseSource and the community are better for it. But let's not lose sight of the fact there is an ecosystem around Eclipse, with a myriad of member companies, each providing unique value to the community, each using Eclipse in a unique way. IBM may repurpose and modify your work for inclusion in their Rational tools. Oracle may repackage some things for JDeveloper. Your own company may use a modified version or repackaging of Eclipse at some point. Will you cry foul when they do? This is our simple, humble, free, non-obligatory offering, and we hope the community sees value in it - just as you see value in your own work. To mutual success, Jens

Gregg, I agree with you on Mac ease of use. But you'd have to admit that the reality is that most folks don't have one. I know the growing market stats, etc. But, in most companies, the budget to get new Macs for an entire department is unlikely. The "use what you have to do something amazing" play is much stronger for most companies in the current economy. As for the iPhone as mac-only... that's what we're fighting against. Regards, Jens

Gregg, thanks for the note. We have plans for Mac support coming soon. However, the initial releases of MobiOne are targeted at Windows developers, who may not have access to or the expertise required on a Mac, but want to take advantage of the mobile Web movement. Since Windows still is the dominant OS in most enterprises, it made sense for us to enable the large marketplace to have access to MobiOne features. Since the OS is/was the barrier for many folks looking to develop for an iPhone, I feel it makes sense to offer Windows support to bust the most common barrier to entry. Vinay; Thanks for the post. I am always genuinely pleased to find developers who look critically at their tool sets as opposed to just flame baiting or "running with the crowd." While I appreciate the thoughts, it's important to note - as Brian did on your post - that the main reason you site for leaving MyEclipse (the product bloat) has been resolved in the most recent version, 8.0. I see that you are on 7.0, which is over a year old. In fact, if you want to go further and see the latest milestone release of 8.5, you can see the new configuration management platform here: http://myeclipseide.com/module-htmlpages-display-pid-449.html that will allow you readily add, remove and manage your software so you can disregard features you are not using. Bryan; This is obviously an issue you have researched and are passionate about. That's excellent. I really wish more people would be up on their research. As I said previously, we can argue causes and effects of global warming in good faith for extended periods. There may not be a single answer that solves the problem, if there is indeed a human cause. However, that issue aside, Genuitec is reducing waste of paper, fossil fuels, and emissions. I cannot see how this is a BAD idea from any context. Being conscious of our impact and reducing waste in all its forms is a good idea for everyone, is it not? We do not purport to be "green crazy," just responsible. Again, I fail to see how saving waste and not emitting pollutions is a bad idea. As for the "repulsed by your weakness and ignorance" comment, well, I'll let that one alone. I would just wonder: do you ever use IBM products? Microsoft? How about Apple? Dell? All of these companies have made conscious efforts to reduce emissions and be more "green." Do you shun all of these companies as well? If so, I am wondering how you get anything done at all. Thanks for the note, Jens

I understand if you think that companies doing anything "green" is a marketing ploy, but I must admit it's a "damned if you do, damned if you don't" situation for businesses. The public wants to see sustainability issues address at all levels, and so asks you to be responsible. If you are not, you are seen as a bad world citizen. If you do, you get naysayers that say you only take action to get a PR boost. Lose, lose. That said, note we are not just touting our own achievements. We are putting our money where our mouth is and even offsetting carbon emissions of others (travellers for EclipseWorld conference). This involves real dollars being exchanged by us towards addressing these global issues. I would hardly say that's a "do something for the sake of doing it" situation. Planetary warming and its causes can be argued by people of good faith for extended periods of time. The emphasis here is that we are doing something that helps, something that takes action and real dollars on Genuitec's part. I would reiterate the challenge posted in the blog in a different form: what are you doing to step up to the plate as an individual or company when it comes to this issue? Or will you simply berate others as disingenuous for attempting to do their part? Eclipse WTP is indeed $0. I don't believe anyone was addressing that, nor would they argue. But the point of the survey was to rate the various IDEs based off of all sorts of categories, and compare/contrast them, not just focus on price. Additionally, it appears a focus of the story is to illuminate value-add on a feature and functionality basis for some of these IDEs and the corresponding value. Value is found in more than price, and is in what you get for it. If this were not the case, all tools companies would be out of business. You might be hard-pressed to tell a developer who has shelled out $60 for MyEclipse or a couple hundred for IntelliJ that they do not get value for their money, which is all this is about. Did you read the article or look at the survey? What additional thoughts do you have on the tools mentioned within?

Kirill - Good question. Genuitec has already paid to IBM to attend. As exhibiting sponsors last year in June 2007, we were invited to return as sponsors in 2008 and exhibit again. As a result of the invitation, we signed agreements last July and paid to sponsor the 2008 conference at the same exhibitor level. We were paid in full about six months ago (October 2007).

Rick - I will agree with you, but not provide a vote on the story since so the display and styling is subjective to the user. While I personally like the redesign, some may not. From my point of view, the worst thing that could happen is that no one comments. Reaction is always better than benign indifference, so I applaud the community you have created and the fact that your users are passionate enough about your services to voice their opinions - positive or negative

jc; As for the numbers, the stat is based off of multiple factors, but is not simply a "used historically" number. There are many ways we harvest this info that would be tedious to post. Needless to say, with over 12,000 companies as customers with developer license counts from 1-4000 and everywhere in the middle, it's not difficult to see how, when coupled with the licences of individual/personal developers, the numbers add up quickly. I'm sorry you have had a bad experience with MyEclipse. Have you tried it out recently? This release has been getting a lot of praise from our users, and I'd invite you to give it a whirl. If you'd like, I could drop you a free subscription trial to test out to see if it changes your mind. 4 years is a long time in this industry and happens to be the entire lifecycle of the MyEclipse product, so there may be some new things you have not taken the time to discover from previous releases. As far as no one saying saying anything nice about it, I believe you missed the most recent niceity in the comment above yours. :-) Finally, I am a bit confused about your comment on nonparticipation. First (and with the caveat that I don't know who all of these voters are), I see only one voter who has voted on primarily MyEclipse stories, with the rest being active participants. Secondly, I notice in your history that you have taken a stance of actively voting AGAINST MyEclipse stories regardless of content type (this one being an exception with a non-vote), so I find it difficult to lend credence to your claim that there is a bias on our end. I don't mind if you don't like MyEclipse. No tool is perfect for everyone. And you're welcome to vote against any story, as am I. But, as the DZone Sheriff himself has acknowledged in the past, we always play fair on DZone, and pride ourselves on it. Again, I would be happy to extend a license to you for evaluation and would welcome any specific feedback you may have. I would disagree. If you read any of Kathy's stuff, she is very highly tech-focused, developer-centric, and business-of-technology savvy. This is a personal tragedy for her, and her absence is a loss for the community at large. And, to be frank, any subject that goes this far above the unimportant stuff we all do (in comparison to her greater life issues and fears), is everyone-related. Developers and non. But, as a crowd that is online constantly and at the forefront of tech-savviness, the audience of DZone is the perfect audience to expose some of the bigger issues Kathy raised. I wish her only the best, and those responsible for these crimes are immediately brought to justice in any way possible.

Kirill - As stated in the blog entry, we have dutifully contributed code back to the Hibernate team, assuming it would be incorporated into the codebase and be made available to the public as the license stipulates. Apparently, that was not the case. Therefore, we are making the code available ourselves at the referenced url. As Maher put it: "I cannot help but fault Genuitec for assuming that providing our source code changes to the Hibernate team would motivate them to accept the enhancements and thereby make the changes public. For that poor assumption, shame on us."

Excellent point. Though wages are lower in many countries compared to the US, there are some parts of the world that may really skew this list for what standard of living you will have there. For example, I would be interested to know what USD$20K/yr would allow you for "purchasing power" in India, Vietnam or other emerging economy - if that's what you got paid. Interesting observation...

Lowell; Agreed. If you look at areas, it seems interesting that Texas has a high percentage of the best gigs, based on this data. Given, Texas is a BIG area, but 6 out of the top 7 in adjusted income. If I were single and looking for a place to go... :-) BTW, that assumes Arlington is the large Arlington in the Dallas area. Is it that one or Virginia, or other?

Rick; Agree. I think sometimes the trend is to view links as not re\levant for developers unless they address a specific technology or provide a trick. The business end of tech companies is often overlooked, but can have a much greater impact than the latest and greatest platform - it can mean a job or the unemployment line.

This seems to be a very thoroughly thought-through article. Definitely worht a vote and your read. Interestingly, his biggest beef for Eclipse/MyEclipse was lack of Java EE 5 support, which is coming next month in MyEclipse's 5.5 GA. :-)

Agree. however, I can imagine there would be a cow in Suntown if they saw an ad headlined "Download NetBeans" that went to the Eclipse.org site... At the very least seems like a lack of class to utilize a competitor's name to drive traffic to your own site. Google is like a box of chocolates...
