I think we might be working with different definitions of "premium" here. I see way more people driving Fords than Ferraris these days. :-)

Differentiation has great value. Being seen as a premium brand is what allows Apple to maintain profit margins that are often orders of magnitude higher than their competitors. One could say that Tesla is losing sales by not having a four wheel drive truck, or that BMW is losing sales by not offering a sub-10K economy car. Apple probably would make more money, short term, if they expand their product line, but it will still be the beginning of the end.

What I actually argued was that JavaOne has been replaced by a bunch of different, more affordable, and better-focused conferences, here in the US and around the world.

There has been some complaints by forefathers of a popular software development community about the way things have changed as their community has grown. I was just rambling about how that is bound to happen and has happened throughout history and that said forefathers might be happier if they just moved on to something else and did it all over again. Kinda like an entrepreneur who leaves the company he founded to those who have the skill and desire to run a company and goes off to start another one.

These are great. I'm going to start using some of them in production applications.

Congratulations to the Griffon Team! They're doing amazing things with this framework and it's great to see the results of their hard work. Keep it up! I also wanted to day that I don't understand why anyone would down vote an announcement of a major milestone for an open source software project. It would be great if mikeem, Joseph.Volcy and nofan would post a comment to explain why they thought this announcement, which is obviously of interest to many here on DZone, deserved their down vote.

His main point is very true. Leaving aside comparisons of frameworks, when you've been doing most of your programming in Groovy and then have to go back to Java, even with the latest features, the additional amount of code that has to be written is a shock to your system. Also, many of the organizations that don't allow Groovy also don't allow the more recent versions of Java, so you often get a double whammy.

I see your point. I do think that Grails makes sense for a host of reasons, but that wasn't the point of this particular post. I guess I took a bit of creative license with this title. :-)

Many people at many organizations have seen and acknowledge the productivity gains that can come with using Grails but have been hesitant to adopt it because it's not a "Java framework". My point is that excuse doesn't make sense and that taking advantage of Grails does make sense.

Grails is being used in enterprises very successfully now. I've used it in three different enterprise "java shops" and I know of others who have as well. Integrating different frameworks that often have overlapping functionality will always be more difficult than working with any one framework by itself. Many of the comments had to do with Maven integration, which is newer and still has some rough spots (though the case could be made that Maven has its share of rough spots too :) Grails is basically a much more productive way of using Java frameworks that are already predominant in the enterprise, so I think the short answer to your question is "Yes. Grails is enterprise-ready".

I think its academic background is part of the reason that Scala hasn't caught as much as Groovy. The academic world is famous for giving us things that are interesting, often even amazing, but not as often useful. Groovy was invented by people trying to get real work done. And it was immediately successful at that and continues to improve in that area as well as others, such as performance.

Rick, thanks for involving the community in this discussion (which I heard about on Twitter :) There is probably much more activity on DZone via Twitter than you are tracking, since many people post their own shortened URLs to DZone articles on Twitter. One reason or this might be that the "Tweet" link on a DZone page creates a URL directly ot the article which, though the ultimate goal, lessens the likely-hood of an up vote. This may be a necessary trade-off since some would certainly be miffed by having to go to an intermediate page before reaching the main content, but it could be an explanation of the lack of clicks on those Tweet links. One more thought. As someone else mentioned, Twitter is becoming a filter for many people to see what's worth looking at closer. Twitter IS my RSS feed. So, I would heartily recommend that you keep the support, keep tweaking and tracking and I'm sure you'll see the results in time.

If you don't want to use any of these languages in your project, then don't. If you have team mates that introduce new languages or technologies just because they can, you should revamp your team. But if you *do* want to use an alternate language, such as Clojure or Scala, Grails is the only web framework that I know of that makes it this easy to do. I apologize if my "silliness" got in the way. Most of the readers of my blog are involved in the Groovy/Grails/Griffon community, and all of this probably made perfect sense to them. If I had written this entry as a DZone submission, I would have given more of a backstory and perhaps not have been as light-hearted. But one of the side-effects of working with Groovy and Grails all day is that you are in a constant good mood! :-) Thanks for reading.

I voted this up even though I'm not referenced on it because I'm not quite as vain as M Easter. But I think we should vote it up to number one because Mr. Burke is doing a service to our industry / community. If we can't learn to laugh at ourselves how can we expect anyone else to laugh at us?!
