hi Chris, thanks for your comment! As I wrote in the article, there might be some cases where one needs to control the lock at the application level. For example, when dealing with distributed transactions and long-running operations. In those cases, it might be necessary to leverage this kind of "soft-lock" to prevent write operations by other application instances.
