Mentoring is a concept that is often misunderstood. Some people confuse Mentoring with Confidence training and think that Mentoring Training means teaching confidence to the client. In fact, it is much more than that. Mentoring involves developing an intimate relationship with a client who is highly motivated to reach his or her goals. In recent years there has been a huge amount of emphasis placed on professional development for school leaders, teachers and administrators. Many professionals believe this focus is due to the fact that most students lack self-confidence and motivation to function well in a classroom setting. As a result, school leaders, teachers and administrators have developed professional development programs that help students become successful in their chosen career. Many professional development activities are now available in the form of certification programs. One of the key elements of the professional development curriculum includes mentoring. Most schools will have a mentor program that is open to all staff members. This allows teachers, principals and administration to get to know each other and form close relationships that build trust, support and effective communication. Most Mentoring Training courses focus on three important principles that are necessary for building effective partnerships within a Mentoring Program. The first thing that a Mentoring Training course will teach you is effective communication. Effective communication links the listener to the speaker. A successful professional development course teaches you how to listen effectively and make sure you understand what is being said. It also teaches students how to use effective communication when they enter into the classroom and when they leave the classroom. Effective communication also links the listener to the presenter. Effective communication encourages the audience or potential audience to want to learn more. Students who feel like they can participate and grow in an educational environment where they have an established rapport as a participant, often find it easier to engage in the class. The leading learning communities strive to take steps to ensure a student feels like they can participate and grow within their educational environment regardless of their ethnicity, culture or economic status. The second principle that a Mentoring Training course will teach you is self-reflection. Self-reflection is the process of looking inside yourself to identify your true calling and how you fit into the world. When you place yourself in the role of a Mentor, you will learn about your strengths and weaknesses, strengths that contribute to your professional development, and the ways in which you can grow as a person. As you meet with various mentors and become a part of their mentoring community, you will learn about effective principals, such as the value of a positive attitude, the power of taking risks and the importance of a willingness to take ownership of your own learning community. The third principle that is taught in many leading learning communities is that it's not the teaching that makes students successful, but rather the development of effective leaders. Students who have undergone and gained mentoring from different leaders within their community to develop an approach to their learning that positively impacts them. Students then take this same approach to other areas of their lives, developing mentoring skills that they can then apply to their professional lives. In addition, mentoring training courses teach students effective communication skills. They help students articulate their goals, demonstrate how they plan and accomplish their goals, and how to stay motivated and inspired. Effective communication skills are key to motivating and encouraging students to maintain their own personal and professional development. Fourteen foundations are accredited by The PME Foundation.
