The incredible growth of artificial intelligence applications is due in no small part to the ever-increasing power of computers and their hardware, which today enables systems to be created and trained according to gigantic data volumes or CPU (or GPU) quantities, managing trillions of parameters.
Beyond all the added value these technologies bring, it's important to be aware of and consider the challenges they represent.
When companies design their Artificial Intelligence strategies, it's essential to consider the regulatory, privacy, and ethical implications.
Implementing ethical guidelines is crucial to ensure compliance with laws on data protection, ensuring user consent, guaranteeing copyright, and respecting people, for example. It's essential to mitigate the risks of data misuse, rights violations, or the generation of biased results. Trust, enforceability, and accountability must be fostered in AI-driven processes.
We're all familiar with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). This is a European regulatory text that frames data processing throughout the European Union (EU). As far as AI is concerned, we must now take into account the Artificial Intelligence Act (AI Act), which presents a risk-based European regulatory approach to AI. Its objectives include ensuring the safety of AI systems on the European market while respecting fundamental rights and EU values, strengthening governance and enforcement to foster investment and innovation in AI, and promoting a single market for legal, safe, and reliable AI applications to avoid fragmentation.
The risk of bias in generated content or in predictions made by AI-driven applications poses a significant ethical problem. If not carefully monitored and treated, AI systems can inadvertently perpetuate or amplify existing societal biases, leading to discriminatory results in areas such as image synthesis, text generation, or decision-making systems.
