The heart of the web application is Cascading Style Sheets (CSS), which allows you to style your web pages and make them look better and richer. There are many CSS frameworks available for you to choose from when architecting an enterprise web application. These frameworks often provide you with responsive standard styles that are pre-built for the same purpose. When choosing a particular framework, look for specific product requirements; it also allows for more customization and the ability to scale and perform when tied to the web app. I will be making a detailed analysis of some popular CSS frameworks like Bootstrap CSS, Tailwind CSS, Chakra UI, and Next UI.

1. Tailwind CSS

Overview

As per its definition, Tailwind CSS is a utility-first CSS framework for rapidly building modern websites without ever leaving your HTML. This allows the developers to directly inject the classes into the respective HTML elements. This takes away all the groundwork that the developer has to do to spin the web page with proper styling. In short, there is no need to maintain an external style sheet. It's easy to customize and scale.

Example

The following is an example of how to create a card using basic HTML. I have added a background color, rounded corners, padding, and a shadow using Tailwind CSS utility classes.

Explanation

  • bg-blue-500: Sets the background color to a shade of blue.
  • p-6: Adds padding of size 6 (equivalent to 1.5rem) around the content inside the card.
  • rounded-lg: Rounds the corners of the card, giving it a softer look.
  • shadow-lg: Applies a large drop shadow to create depth and separation from the background.

2. Bootstrap CSS

Overview

Bootstrap CSS is well-known and famous for its extensive list of responsive and mobile-first components. It uses a 12-column layout grid system that works well on cross-platforms, such as mobile devices. It also has an extensive list of pre-styled components to choose from.

Example

The following is a similar example of how to create a card using basic HTML.

  • card: Bootstrap’s card class styles the container with a card-like appearance.
  • bg-primary: Applies a primary background color (here, blue) to the card.
  • text-white: Sets the text color to white for better readability against the blue background.
  • p-4: Adds padding of size 4 (equivalent to 1rem) inside the card.
  • shadow-lg: Adds a large drop shadow for depth.

3. Chakra UI

Overview

Chakra UI is a simple, modular, and accessible component library that gives you the building blocks you need to build your React applications. With Chakra UI, you can create an accessible React application with speed. Chakra UI strictly follows WAI-ARIA standards for all components. It is usable, composable, and also offers light and dark modes.

Implementing a button using Chakra UI within a React component:

4. Skeleton

Overview

Skeleton allows you to create adaptive and accessible interfaces for web apps of any shape or size. It's friendly, adaptive, and highly customizable. Tailwind's unique utility class approach to CSS styling informs Skeleton's design from the ground up, enabling you to create or expand your own personal design system.

Conclusion

Understanding project requirements, team skills, and long-term scalability is crucial when choosing the appropriate CSS framework. Tailwind CSS allows for a tremendous deal of customization, but it does require an understanding of utility-first design. Although Bootstrap CSS offers extensive components, special designs could need more customization. To adapt to React-based applications, Chakra UI and Next UI prioritize accessibility and contemporary design concepts. Skeleton excels at quickly creating simple designs. Solution architects can make well-informed decisions that lead to effective enterprise web applications by comparing each framework to these standards.
